I am in high school, and currently a freshman, but every year, the seniors in band have to make a halftime show. They have to choose music, make coordinates for everyone, and everything else that is required to make a halftime show. My high school band, however, doesn't have a pit/front ensemble, only a battery. I was listening to music on this website, and I would like it if we could perform that song for our show, but in the percussion feature, it requires a pit/front ensemble. The percussion feature is right at the beginning, and you don't hear much else from the pit so I was thinking that right after the feature, they could switch to marching percussion instruments. I would like to know how I could ask my band director if we could have a pit crew for once.

pit crews are a nickname for the people that help the pit/front line

a lot of people in my band that don't play marching instuments (oboe, bassoon...) are part of the pit. and some others from larger sections (flute, clarinet, sax) decide to convert to pit. you could try compromising with the sections and looking for voluteers.

get a group of others to back you up. make friends with the seniors, then ask. show them some cool front's.

Having battery members play in the front ensemble is totally doable. For percussion features, my band usually has people from the battery (or people who play wind instruments) join the pit for the piece. Finding people who would be willing to play in the front ensemble would definitely help. Is there anyone in battery who would want a front ensemble? Like others have said, find people who would would be willing to help. It'll make asking a lot easier.

Thanks for the help, and pitqurl, I am only a freshman, I am just looking for music right now. I won't actually make the show for another 3 years. Also, the only problem with wind players switching to pit is that they would have to purchase mallets, which would be a waste of money in my opinion(to buy mallets just for one song and never use them again).

Yeah. My best recommendation is really nail down a piece of music that is really doable, and since it's three years away, get people who might be interested in doing pit with you, not even just necessarily battery played. Also, you might want to plant the idea in your directors mind now. Maybe not ask for it just yet, but at least bring it up. And who knows, maybe three years down the road you'll have a pit

Try and get your school to buy them? :P Or just stick them on parts that don't need mallets. And there's always the tried and true method of borrowing mallets from someone else. People at my school use that one a lot. :P
