The average front ensemble member has a keyboard instrument or two and a cymbal in front of them. My question for my fellow front members is what do you prefer to play: fast licks or massive impacts? As for me, it's a tough choice. The licks are really fun to play and they're usually placed in parts where no one else is playing so you get to shine. On the other hand, playing huge impact points on the cymbals are also really fun. It's almost the exact opposite in that everyone is playing, but you get to add a huge portion of the effect to the rest of the band. Impacts also make great chances to really perform, looking up into the audience, smiling, having a great time.
This past season, my front ensemble had plenty of licks that took time to set in place but ended up great. One in the very beginning of the show always had a judge saying "you guys have a great front ensemble". On the other hand, the end of our closer had us killing our cymbals, and listening to the recording, many bandmates from all sorts of sections typically recognized those hits and rolls as the front ensemble.
