As a horn player myself, I would like to clarify something with whoever may read this.
Excerpt from the wikipedia article on the Horn: "Descended from the natural horn, the instrument is often informally known as the French horn. However, this is technically incorrect since the instrument is not French in origin, but German. Therefore, the International Horn Society has recommended since 1971 that the instrument be simply called the horn."
Please do not refer to this instrument as a french horn, as this is wrong. That is all.

I wonder why it was called French Horn to begin with.

During the 1800's sometime there was a lot of really good horns coming out of France and all the profesional players played French horns and the name stuck

The usage of "french horn" is only wide spread in the United States. I'm not sure why that is.

The United States has a lot of confusing of nationalities in my opinion. French Horn, French Fries, Chinese fortune cookie, etc. (Don't get me wrong though, I am from the states )

But if we just called it the horn, couldn't someone possibly get it mixed up with the English Horn? I'm just throwing that out there, as an idea. It sorta sounds silly, I know.

It's not silly. I thought about that too, but I think people tend to think of French Horn before English Horn. Also, we are on a brass page, not woodwind.
